UCLA Housing accommodates approximately 15,000 students, faculty, and staff each year both on campus and in University-owned apartments off campus. In addition, approximately 10,000 guests attending conferences and summer school live on campus during the summer months. Despite preventative measures, bed bug sightings have been reported in UCLA’s housing facilities.
Information about bed bugs and measures to prevent and manage occurrences are available on the UCLA Housing website: Treatment of Bed Bugs in UCLA's On-Campus Housing Facilities & University-Owned Apartments. Our procedures for taking action on suspected cases of bed bug infestation are detailed below.
What to Do If You Suspect Infestation of Bed Bugs
If you are a UCLA on-campus resident and suspect bed bugs in your room, immediately report the problem to the your 24-hour front desk attendant. If you are in an off-campus apartment, immediately contact the rental office during normal working hours or your apartment coordinator after hours and on weekends.
The front desk or UA staff member you speak with will record your location and immediately contact the housing response team. Within 24 hours of your request, the response team coordinator will arrange a site visit with the pest management operator to confirm whether or not there are bed bugs in your room or apartment.
Our goal is to keep you informed throughout this process by establishing daily communication to keep you in the loop regarding the status of inspections, findings, and treatment.
You may request to be temporarily relocated while the situation is being investigated. We will assist you with the relocation and help you take appropriate precautions to avoid cross-contamination of your temporary location. Guidelines will be provided to you if you are interested in this option.
If you or any of your roommates have health symptoms such as bug bite marks or unusual skin rashes, you should arrange for medical consultation at the ASHE center or with your personal healthcare provider.
Verification of Infestation
Once notified, the pest management operator will arrange to visit your room or apartment, speak with you and any other affected occupants, and retrieve samples. A UCLA Housing representative will coordinate the visit and contact you as soon as findings are received.
If the situation is clearly not bed bugs, the pest management operator will determine what is causing the problem and if any pest control services are needed. If you were temporarily relocated, you will be able to return to your room or apartment once the situation is resolved.
If a bed bug infestation is verified, the pest management operator will inspect adjacent rooms or apartments to determine the extent of the infestation and will document affected locations.
A member of the UCLA Housing response team will notify you about your specific situation and provide you with guidelines outlining what you need to do to prepare yourself and your room/apartment for successful eradication treatment.
We will arrange for temporary accommodations, assist with moving your personal items to your new room/apartment, and assist you in preparing personal belongings left in the infected room/apartment for treatment.
Treatment & Return to Your Room/Apartment
The pest management operator will coordinate with the UCLA Housing representative to treat your room/apartment. We will inform you about the process and type of treatment being used.
After completing the treatment, the pest management operator will re-check your room/apartment and verifying that the treatment was successful. Once treatment is completed, a UCLA Housing representative will arrange for the deep cleaning and re-assembly of your room/apartment. We will then notify you and assist in re-locating you back to your room/apartment or arrange for a permanent relocation if that becomes necessary.
