Graduate Housing in University Apartments

Definition

-University Apartments North (UAN)

The graduate housing complexes in UAN are Weyburn Terrace and the Hilgard Apartments. Both are located in Westwood adjacent to the UCLA campus.

Weyburn Terrace is comprised of nine buildings: seven original courts built in 2004. Paseo and Weyburn Commons were added in 2013. While the Commons building houses the University Apartments North (UAN) Front Desk, common spaces, and a handful of units reserved for faculty, the other eight buildings are comprised solely of apartments designated to graduate students. Weyburn Terrace offers approximately 1950 bed spaces spanning approximately 1400 apartments.

The Hilgard Apartments is comprised of two buildings and composed entirely of studio apartments.  Hilgard is much smaller facility with only 80 apartments.

-University Apartments South (UAS)

The single graduate housing complexes in UAS are listed below and are located approximately 5 miles south of campus in the Palms/Mar Vista area.

Rose Avenue is 2 buildings located on Rose Avenue near Sepulveda Boulevard. It is comprised of 93 units.

Keystone Mentone is comprised of two buildings on Keystone Avenue and Mentone Avenue at Venice Boulevard. They are comprised of 244 units.

Venice Barry is one building located on Barry Avenue and Venice Boulevard. It is comprised of 140 units.

Contracts and Rental Agreements

-UAN

Graduate housing in UAN is sold via housing contracts that specify a defined length of stay, including designated contract start and end dates. While contracts start dates vary based on student preferences and apartment availability, all contracts end on July 1, which roughly coincides with the end of the academic year. Students are obligated to the full contract term unless an official termination request is submitted and approved by Housing Services. (Note: Because Law and Medical students are on a semester schedule and their programs end during the month of May, they may opt out of the final month of the contract so long as they provide notice to Housing Services by April 1.)

UAN Single graduate housing contracts are sold per-person with a per-person monthly charge. The monthly charge does not vary based on the number of occupants in a unit.

-UAS

Graduate housing in UAS is sold on a month-to-month basis. When accepting an offer, tenants are required to pay a $500 security deposit. Tenants are not required to stay for a specified amount of time, but they must submit a Notice of Intent to vacate via the MyHousing portal at least 30 days to vacating.

UAN Single graduate housing contracts are sold per-person with a per-person monthly charge. The monthly charge does not vary based on the number of occupants in a unit.

Apartment Types

-UAN

Weyburn Terrace and the Hilgard Apartments are comprised of following fully-furnished apartment types:

  • 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartments
  • 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom townhouses
  • Studio apartments
  • Economy studio apartments

Weyburn Terrace offers all apartment types while Hilgard is comprised solely of studio apartments.

The Economy studio apartment is a designation given to 32 units on the ground floors of the Paseo building. They are charged at a discounted rate because of a retaining wall that significantly obstructs the inflow of natural light.

2 bedroom apartments house 2 occupants and studio apartments house 1 occupant.

All UAN apartments are fully furnished.

-UAS

The following unfurnished apartment types are available in all UAS buildings:

  • 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom apartment
  • 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment
  • Junior 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom apartment

The Junior 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom apartment is only available in Venice Barry. They are charged at a decreased rate because they are smaller in size than a typical 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom unit.

All UAS apartments are unfurnished.

Roommates

-UAN & UAS

In 2-bedroom units, Housing Services pairs roommates based on the lifestyle preferences indicated on the housing application. While students may request specific individuals as roommates on the application, Housing Services will only consider roommate requests if both students have been issued offers for the same building and room type. Roommate requests are not guaranteed.

Additional Tenants

-UAN & UAS

In studios and one bedroom units within single graduate housing, tenants have the option to bring an additional tenant (age 18 or older) to live with them. The primary tenant still assumes all responsibility for payment and the terms of the rental agreement/contract.

Eligibility

-UAN & UAS

Graduate students, medical and dental residents, post-doctoral scholars (“postdocs”), visiting graduate researchers (VGRs), and medical and dental fellows are eligible for Graduate housing.

Priority for single graduate housing is given in the following order:

  1. Graduate students
  2. Medical/Dental Residents
  3. Postdoctoral Scholars & Medical/Dental Fellows
  4. Visiting Graduate Researchers 

Graduate students and residents are given the highest priority. Post-doctoral scholars, fellows, and visiting graduate researchers will only be considered once all students and residents have been accommodated.

For all new incoming residents, a 3-year eligibility cap is in place, meaning students can reside in these UAN and UAS facilities for a maximum of 3 total years. Exceptions are occasionally granted for students requesting fourth years of housing, however, these are rare. The number of years resided in single graduate housing does count against the eligibility cap for family housing.

Parking

-UAN

Parking is managed differently between Weyburn Terrace and the Hilgard Apartments. While parking in Weyburn Terrace is typically available, parking in Hilgard is extremely limited and there is often a waitlist (maintained by HS). Parking is not guaranteed in either complex.

Weyburn Terrace: the parking assignment process is managed by the UAN Administrative Office at the time the student checks in. If a parking space is available and assigned, payments will be made to Transportation Services.

The Hilgard Apartments: the parking assignment and collections process is managed by Housing Services. To be placed on the Hilgard parking waitlist, select “Yes” on the Parking Preference page of the application.

-UAS

One parking space is provided for each bedroom within the unit. Extra parking spaces can be requested at the UAS Rental Office, but they are not guaranteed.
